QC RTC convicts convenience store owner
The Regional Trial Court (RTC) of Quezon City Branch 97 has convicted the owner of a convenience store for non-remittance of monthly contributions of her employees, a violation of Republic Act 8282 or the Social Security Act of 1997.
SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel F. Dooc said that Elvira C. Sembrano was ordered to pay more than P691,000 in unremitted contributions, computed as of January 7, 2013 and the corresponding three-percent penalty until full paid.
“Aside from payment of her delinquency, Sembrano was sentenced by the lower court to suffer six years and one day in jail and to pay a fine of P20,000” explained Dooc.
Based on the decision, Sembrano did not comply with the billing and demand letters issued to her by the SSS. Her absence in the scheduled hearing on March 26, 2016, led to the RTC issuing a warrant of arrest against her.
“Sembrano was given a chance to settle her obligation but instead of complying with her responsibility, she went into hiding. However, this will not stop SSS from running after her to ensure that she will pay her employees’ contributions,” said Dooc.
As of this writing, Sembrano remains at large. “We are seeking the assistance of her former employees and the public to immediately inform the SSS of her whereabouts or any information that will lead to her arrest,” said Dooc.
